Native Planting


Native Planting of trees and shrubs original to Kalamazoo County and Southwest Michigan are performed from an accepted proposal to help you:

  • establish into your landscape naturally site-adapted trees and shrubs native to your neighborhood, county or region.
  • benefit from genetic durability and natural trunk flare characteristic to seed-grown woody plants.
  • achieve fast establishment by selection of appropriately sized and methodically planted trees and shrubs, protected from deer and rabbits and planted during cool seasons.
  • provide establishment care to new plants with complimentary watering device and scheduled first fertilization and pruning.

Proposals for Native Planting are developed from an Arborist Evaluation or other scheduled appointment and include:

  • location of each planting, selection criteria
  • plant species, common name, planting size
  • sourcing, transport, nursery summary
  • planting method and technique
  • mulch ring, watering moat, supplemental support
  • deer and rabbit protection
  • complimentary watering bubbler with use directions
  • schedule for complimentary first fertilization and pruning
  • recommended planting period
  • recommended follow-up care


Customer sourced planting of ornamental cultivars, fruit-bearing or other non-native functional trees and shrubs is performed from an accepted proposal developed from an Arborist Evaluation or other scheduled appointment and includes: trunk-flare and root-ball reset, planting, mulch ring/watering moat, supplemental support, deer and rabbit protection and scheduled complimentary first fertilization and pruning.


Arborist Evaluation service fees may be credited towards Native Planting or customer sourced planting within a 12-month period.

Evaluation service fees are required for proposals in Allegan, Battle Creek, Bloomingdale, Decatur, Delton, Lawrence, Marcellus, Mendon, Shelbyville and Three Rivers.
